The Importance of Good Companions

Yesterday I attended a talk where one nugget stayed with me and that is the importance of having good friends and companions in your life who encourage you in your journey towards truth instead of leading you astray.

The words we say, the resources we read or watch, and the people we stick around with and speak to on a daily basis are sculpting us into the person we become or forming the thoughts we embrace. It is a form of programming or conditioning and before we know it we become like the people we have been associating with. Therefore we should always bear in mind the power of association and that we do not become deviated from our true essence.

I'm the only person I know that's lost a quarter of a billion dollars in one year.... It's very character-building.

When I was 17, I read a quote that went something like: "If you live each day as if it was your last, someday you'll most certainly be right." It made an impression on me, and since then, for the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: "If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?" And whenever the answer has been "No" for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.
I didn't see it then, but it turned out that getting fired from Apple was the best thing that could have ever happened to me. The heaviness of being successful was replaced by the lightness of being a beginner again, less sure about everything. It freed me to enter one of the most creative periods of my life.
Death is the destination we all share, no one has ever escaped it. And that is as it should be because death is very likely the single best invention of life.
Your time is limited, so don't waste it living someone else's life. Don't be trapped by dogma — which is living with the results of other people's thinking. Don't let the noise of others' opinions drown out your own inner voice. And most important, have the courage to follow your heart and intuition. They somehow already know what you truly want to become. Everything else is secondary.
Remembering that I'll be dead soon is the most important tool I've ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life. Because almost everything — all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure — these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important. Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart.

The only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven't found it yet, keep looking. Don't settle. As with all matters of the heart, you'll know when you find it.
Stay hungry. Stay foolish.

On Risk

A survey was conducted where elderly people reaching the end of their lives were asked what they would have done differently if they had the chance to live their lives again.

The top two answers were :

1. They wish they had taken more risks

2. They wish they had spent more time with their families.

Are you taking enough risks in your life ?

The word risk comes from the arabic word rizq which means provisions. If we let our intuition guide us into doing what we think we should be doing, and not worry about what will happen if we fail but trusting that God will provide and take care of things, then we are taking enough risks and growing as a person.
